Frequently Asked Questions – Northern Lights Tours With Lapin Taivas

The best time to see the Northern Lights in Lapland is from September 1st to April 15th, when the nights are long and dark enough. Although auroras can appear as early as mid-August and as late as mid-April, the optimal viewing season is when the skies are darker for longer hours.

We use all available tools solar data, weather maps, and aurora forecasts to give you the best possible chance of seeing the Northern Lights. However, the aurora is a natural phenomenon and remains unpredictable, despite scientific data and monitoring. Therefore, no display can be guaranteed. We kindly ask for your patience and trust in our guides, witnessing the magic of nature sometimes takes time, but it’s always worth it.

Reliable predictions are only possible 1 to 3 days in advance. Even NASA’s solar flare charts can sometimes be misleading. The most accurate forecast happens when the solar storm reaches near-Earth satellites, providing data that allows us to predict visibility in the next 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on solar particle speed and density. Please note that even the best forecasts carry a 35–50% margin of error until the final few hours.

If skies are fully clouded or conditions are unfavorable, we may reschedule your tour to another night, depending on availability. We are flexible and will always keep you informed. However, if rescheduling is not possible or you are not available for another night, we offer a full refund for that tour. Your satisfaction and safety are our priority, and we understand that plans and weather don’t always align.

We keep our groups small and personal with a maximum of 8 guests per tour to ensure comfort and a highquality experience.

For your comfort, we use Mercedes Sprinter vans adapted for Arctic conditions. Each van accommodates up to 8 guests, offering spacious interiors especially appreciated by taller travelers. Expect a smooth and comfortable ride throughout your adventure.

Yes! Your guide will take highquality professional photos of you and the auroras. All photos are included in the price and will be uploaded to a cloud folder within 72 hours after the tour. You’ll receive a QR code during the tour to access and download your images.

We recommend wearing thermal base layers, warm mid-layers, and wool socks. We can wear thermal overalls, winter boots, gloves, and hats to keep you warm and comfortable throughout the night.

Our online booking system closes 4–6 hours before the tour begins. For last-minute availability, please contact us directly via WhatsApp, Instagram, email, or phone. If there is space available, we’ll be happy to arrange your booking manually.

Yes! We run Northern Lights tours every night from September to April, depending on aurora activity and weather conditions. Our aim is to offer you the best possible chances every night.

Yes, children are welcome, but please note that our tours can be challenging for younger participants. Tours often end between 2:00 AM and 5:00 AM, and if your child has an early bedtime, this might be difficult. Since we offer an “unlimited range” tour, we sometimes drive up to 3–4 hours one way to find clear skies (though most drives are 1–2 hours). If your child is not comfortable with long car journeys or staying up late, please consider this before booking.

Our tours are not always suitable for everyone. Winter conditions in Lapland can be slippery, snowy, and extremely cold. Long outdoor exposure and remote terrain can be just as demanding for seniors as for children. If you have concerns about mobility, weather, or comfort, please consult with us beforehand to ensure this tour is a good fit for you.

Absolutely! Feel free to bring your own camera. Our guides will gladly assist with camera settings, composition, and how to capture the aurora.

  • Vegetarian sandwiches
